This website was developped entirely using Linux software. Linux is easy to install, it's much easier and better to setup than Windows, easy and comfortable to use and - first and foremost: it is save, very fast and it works reliably.
Design and programming of this website strictly complies to the international standards of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). This is why this website can be viewed using any browser.
Here some links about Linux and to applications I work with:
openSUSE is a worldwide community program sponsored by Novell that promotes the use of Linux everywhere. The program provides free and easy access for everybody to an excellent Linux distribution that is easy to install (also for beginners!) with everything you need, want or might wish...: openSUSE Linux.
KDE is a powerful Free Software graphical desktop environment for Linux. It offers a wide range of desktop effects (like transparency, wobbly windows etc.) since long time before Windows started to advertise such effects as "revolutionary scoop". Unlike Windows, where such things work only in the more expensive versions (and only partially), they are just included in Linux and can be set up (or deactivated) just as you like - easy and and exactly as you like it. Particularly they can also be enabled on older machines.
digiKam is an extremely versatile image editing program, very easy and comfortbale to use, also offering excellent tools for the management and administration of your image collections.
The GIMP is the professional image editing programm on Linux computers. If offers everything experienced Photoshop users want and it can also handle the previous .psd files.
I have running the open-source HTTP server "Apache" on my computer without affecting the performance of my PC at all. Using "Apache" the best web server is available on my local machine and I can test my websites locally with any given browser without the need to upload the pages to the server of my internet provider. Furthermore I can use own scripts (e.g. for my data bases etc.) and let them execute by the server. Apache is the most commonly used web server worldwide. You often realize that a website uses another server if the site doesn't work... :-)
My web shop is based on a MySQL data base, but I also use this ingenious data base software for the making of this website, the administration of my images, my customers data base and much more. The data base server is also included for free in all Linux distributions and very easy to install. On SQL's website the server can be downloaded also for other operating systems and for Windows.
On the website PHP Manual it is summarized short and correct: "PHP is a widely-used Open Source general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for Web development and can be embedded into HTML. ... The best things in using PHP are that it is extremely simple for a newcomer, but offers many advanced features for a professional programmer. Don't be afraid reading the long list of PHP's features. You can jump in, in a short time, and start writing simple scripts in a few hours."
That's just true! And moreover, this PHP Manual is built absolutely ingeniously: everything is explained simple, but still precise and in detail. For this website I use PHP5.
Web-browser, advanced e-mail and newsgroup client, IRC chat client, and HTML editing made simple -- all your Internet needs in one application. An appealing design, very simple handling, high speed and fundamentally better security than with MSIE - and these are only some of its advantages. My suggestion: just download and try it :-)
The "just browser" by Mozilla, which led countless people forget that there was something so very complicated, insecure and deficient like stone age Microsoft IE. In contrast to the Seamonkey internet application suite with many additional internet tools Firefox can only one thing: surfing. But this it does perfectly! Free of charge and easy to install (even on Win PCs), extremely simple to use, thanks to the concentration on displaying websites and their contents very fast and because of the open source development always up to date in regards of security. I also suggest: just load it down and try it - it can also coexist with Seamonkey and MSIE without disturbing the other programs.
Opera is a class of its own. It is an extremely fast browser but with a lot more capabilities than just showing web pages. On the Opera Browser Site you can find an overview. Opera offers countless possibilities to change the execution and display of websites according to your needs, use own style sheets and... and ... and... The dazzling array of possibilities and its differentness make Opera a little complicated for beginners, but as soon as you're used to it, you don't want to miss many of the features that only Opera offers. Of course you can also install and try it on your PC additionally to your other browsers..
